The Faith Academy of Marble Falls boys basketball team defeated Bulverde Bracken 55-34 Dec. 16 in the first game of the Flames’ tournament.

The Flames now prepare to face TMI Episcopal at 6 p.m. Friday and Austin Veritas at noon Saturday, Dec. 17.

“It was a typical 9 a.m. game,” Faith head coach Zakk Revelle said. “Both teams didn’t show their best until the fourth quarter. We adjusted to what they were doing to us. I was happy with how we came out in the second half. We understood our assignments and accomplished them.”

The Warriors led 5-1 early in the opening stanza and both teams played to a 9-9 tie at the end thanks to a putback by senior forward Will Lewis and a transition bucket from Gabe Lopez on a superb bounce pass from Diego Chavira.

Bracken took a four-point lead early in the second period, but senior power forward and center Brock Davis quickly erased that with a drive to the bucket, blocking a shot and then scoring on the other end, and tipping in a missed lay-up on a fast break.

Senior forward Will Lewis also tipped in a miss and added two free throws then found Davis for a two-footer to give the Flames a 23-17 lead at the half.

Faith never let up in the second half, building a 39-28 advantage after the third quarter by outscoring the Warriors 16-11 and outscoring them 16-6 in the fourth.

In the final period, the Flames showed a commitment to patience by working the half-court offense and waiting for the wide-open shot before attempting it.

Revelle said he was pleased with the obvious positives and commended his players on the no-so-obvious such as getting behind the ball-handler and tipping the ball out of his control to another Flame.

“I really enjoyed watching our mental effort,” he said. “We weren’t stalling in the half court. What you saw on getting an open shot is a drill we ran (Dec. 15) called One More. You throw it to the next man who’s open. Seeing that is a coach’s dream.”

Davis led the Flames with 25 points, scoring 15 in the first half. Lopez added 13 thanks to scoring 9 points off three 3-pointers, and Lewis had 12 including two 3-pointers that tore Bracken’s heart.

“We’re glad to get a win,” Revelle said. “Bracken will make the playoffs and will win their district. It was a good start to our tournament.”
